Abstract:

ABSTRACT        Background and Objective: MiRNAs are small RNAs that are expressed in most eukaryotes, and can regulate gene expression by attaching to the 3’ end of target mRNA. MicroRNA-101 (miR-101) post-transcriptional regulation is important for host-virus interactions. In addition, miR-101 has a tumor suppressive role in liver cancer and metastasis, and induces apoptosis in tumor cells. We examined miR-101 expression in patients with chronic hepatitis B, hepatitis B virus (HBV)-associated cirrhosis and healthy individuals.        Methods: The study was performed on 108 whole blood samples (36 samples from each group) collected in EDTA tubes. RNA was extraction by RNX-plus kit according to the manufacturer’s protocol. Finally, miRNA expression was evaluated using relative real time PCR.          Results: A 2.4-fold increase was observed in miR-101 expression in patients with chronic hepatitis B, while there was a 3.5-fold increase in miR-101 expression in patients with HBV-associated cirrhosis compared with healthy controls (P=0.003). MiR-101 overexpression in patients with HBV-associated cirrhosis was more notable that in patients with chronic hepatitis B.          Conclusion: According to the results, evaluating miR-101 expression may predict disease progression from chronic hepatitis B to HBV-associated cirrhosis.          Keywords: MicroRNAs, Chronic Hepatitis B, Liver Cirrhosis, MiR-101.

Mutations at Nucleotide 1762, 1764 and 1766 of Hepatitis B Virus X Gene in Patients with Chronic Hepatitis B and Hepatitis B-Related Cirrhosis

Abstract       Background and objective: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is a DNA virus with high tendency toward hepatic tissue. There are currently about 3 million HBV-infected people and 350 to 400 million chronic carriers of this virus in the world. X protein plays a role in the over-expression of oncogenes, carcinogenicity of liver cells and overlaps with the basal co...

The Absence of Hepatitis C Virus Infection Among Patients with Hepatitis B virus in Mashhad, Iran

Background and Aims: Many studies have provided evidence for the role of hepatitis B and C viruses in the development of liver cancer. Although the routine treatment is available for both conditions, no definite guideline is available to treat patients dually infected with HBV and HCV. This study was performed to determine the frequency of HBV/HCV-coinfection in Mashhad, North-East of Iran. Mat...

CHARACTERISTICS AND PREVALENCE OF OCCULT HEPATITIS B VIRUS INFECTION IN PATIENTS WITH HEPATITIS C IN IRAN

ABSTRACT Background: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection in patients who lack detectable hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) is called occult hepatitis B infection. Such infections have been frequently identified in patients with chronic hepatitis Cliver disease, but their prevalence is not known. Methods: 207 patients with chronic hepatitis C who were HCV -RNA and antiHCV positive were stu...

Occult Hepatitis B Virus Infection in Chronic Hemodialysis Patients in Panje-Azar Hospital, Gorgan

Abstract Background and objectives: Hepatitis B virus infection is a major health problem in worldwide. The prevalence of Occult and chronic HBV in hemodialysis patients is higher than standard in developing countries. People with occult HBV are negative for HBV surface antigen (HBsAg) but positive for HBV-DNA. We aimed to evaluate occult hepatitis B infection in patients under hemodialysis in ...

The Increased Level of Serum p53 in Hepatitis B-Associated Liver Cirrhosis

Background: The ability of tumour suppressor protein p53 (P53) to regulate cell cycle processes can be modulated by hepatitis B virus (HBV). While preliminary evidences indicates the involvement of protein-x of HBV (HBx) in altering p53 DNA binding, no further data have been accumulated for the significance of serum p53 in chronic hepatitis B virus infected patients. Methods: 72 non-cirrhotic a...

The Study of Cerumen Hepatitis B Infection in Chronic Hepatitis B Patients by Real-Time PCR

Introduction: The hepatitis B is a viral infection that causes a big problem globally. About 2 billion people worldwide are infected and there are now about 400 million HBV-DNA carriers around the world. HBV infection is the ninth cause of death worldwide and infects about 350 million new cases each year in the world. HBV-DNA can be spotted in different body secretions and fluids, including se...
